My Last Bite: Backyard Grill & Bar serves up tasty burgers and more

JENNIFER WHEELER/RRSTAR.COM

Name: Backyard Grill & Bar
Address: There are three locations: 6473 N. Second St., Loves Park; 5390 Elevator Road, Roscoe; and 201 W. State St., Cherry Valley. We ate at the Loves Park restaurant.
Opened: The Loves Park restaurant opened first in 1996.
Owner: Rich and Dana Schmidt.
Hours: 11 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday.
Wheelchair accessible: Yes
Phone: The Loves Park restaurant’s phone number is 815-636-9430, Roscoe’s number is 815-623-6677 and Cherry Valley’s number is 815-332-4176.
Website: backyardgrill.com
Entree price range: Flatbread pizzas are $7, salads cost $7 to $13, sandwiches cost $7 to $10.50, burgers cost $7 to $9.50 and steaks cost $10.50 to $20.50. Prices are for the Loves Park location.
Two most popular dishes: Co-owner Dana Schmidt said the Backyard Burger ($9) is a favorite and comes with a half-pound of Angus beef that’s grilled over hickory wood. It’s topped with crisp bacon, American cheese, onion rings and tangy barbecue sauce. Lettuce, tomato and onion, and steak fries, home style fries or onion rings come with every burger. The ribs ($13.50 for a half rack or $18 for a full rack) are also a popular item. The slow cooked and tender racks come with a soup or house salad, a choice of potato or rice, and a choice of backed beans, cole slaw, steamed veggies or cottage cheese. All dishes listed here and below are for the Loves Park location.
Menu’s unique item: Each item on the children’s menu on Tuesday during “Kid’s Night” only cost $1. There is a limit of three children per paying adult. Dine in only.
We ate: My boyfriend, Todd Rudolf, and I shared the potato skins appetizer ($8), which came with six skins loaded with gooey cheddar cheese, bacon bits and sour cream on the side. You can never have too much bacon in a meal, so we liked the generous portion on our dish.
I ordered Tuesday’s lunch special, the Sunny Side burger ($4.99), which came with American cheese, bacon and egg on top of a beef patty. I chose steak fries as my side. I liked that the egg was cooked enough so that it wouldn’t crack from the slightest amount of pressure from the bun, but wasn’t so overdone that it wouldn’t break to create a moist element on the burger. The fries were seasoned well.
Todd ordered the Backyard Club ($8), which came with turkey, ham, roast beef, American cheese, Swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomatoes on Ciabatta bread. It is served with cow chips, which are seasoned thinly-sliced potatoes. If would be unfair for anyone to call this sandwich large. It’s huge. We’re talking toothpicks aren’t long enough to hold the entire sandwich in place huge. If you order this, be prepared to take at least half home for another meal or two. Todd said he could taste the freshness of the ingredients in his dish. The deli meat is shaved, not prepackaged.
“Ahh” factor: The customer service really shines here. The staff is extremely friendly, even knowing quite a few customers’ names when they walk in the door. Management isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty by bussing tables or carrying out food to keep patrons happy.
“Hmm” moment: The menu prices slightly differ by location because of the timing of when the new menus are created.
Next time, I’ll: have to come on Pub Quiz nights, which take place from 8 to 10 p.m. every Wednesday.

About the winner, Backyard Grill and Bar
After working at chain restaurants for years, Rich Schmidt wanted to do something different. He was working at an Applebee’s when he met Martin Elliott around 1993. A mutual friend told them about a restaurant going out of business.
The soon-to-be vacant location was in Loves Park at 6473 N. Second St. Schmidt and Elliott decided to join together in 1996 and open Backyard Grill and Bar in the Loves Park location. Since then, they have opened a Roscoe location and a Cherry Valley location.
“We have these specially-made grills that cook over hickory wood. That’s where the name Backyard Grill came from,” said Schmidt.
The restaurant’s decor also has a backyard feel, from the outdoor scenery painted on the walls to the garden hoses, rakes and other outdoor equipment that hang on the walls. The pair wanted to give the restaurants a feeling of being outdoors while customers are indoors.
The restaurants have become very popular and are a regular hang-out for the football crowds.
Their claim to fame is their wings, prime rib and burgers.
The restaurant has expanded into several area Woodman’s locations where their sauces and seasonings are available for sale as well as on their website. They sell wing sauce, barbecue sauce, and Jamaican, Cajun and backyard seasonings. They also offer catering.
Elliott said they are also offering a gift certificate program for the upcoming holiday season that is $10 off for every $50 purchased. There is no minimum on the number of gift certificates that can be purchased.
You will find Elliott and Schmidt at their locations daily. They still cook and work within the restaurants every day, making sure their customers have a pleasant dining experience.

The following article appeared int the Rockford Register Star newspaper on July 6, 2010:

The Dish: Backyard Grill & Bar menu has family feel, hickory taste

By Rebecca Burlette

After working at chain restaurants for years, Rich Schmidt wanted to do something different.

“(I wanted a) fresher feel. Like a family barbecue,” said Schmidt.

He was working at an Applebees when he met Martin Elliott around 1993. A mutual friend told them about a restaurant going out of business.

The soon-to-be vacant location was in Loves Park, 6473 N. Second St.

Schmidt and Elliott agreed if one was going to go for it, the other would, too, so in 1996, Backyard Grill & Bar opened in the Loves Park location.

“We have these specially made grills that cook over hickory wood. That’s where there the name Backyard Grill came from,” said Schmidt.

The restaurant’s decor also has a backyard feel, from the outdoor scenery painted on the walls to the garden hose that adorns it, Schmidt said they wanted customers to feel at home.

He also credits his staff for the restaurant’s warm feel.

“We have great employees with longevity. … Lots of our guests come on nights that their favorite server or bartender is working,” he said.

In fact, Backyard Grill & Bar’s Loves Park location was such a hit that in 1998, they expanded to Cherry Valley and in 1999, a location was opened in Roscoe.

“(We opened) three stores in a short time,” he said.

The restaurant even expanded into several area Woodman’s locations where their sauces and seasonings are available for sale.

But it is Backyard’s items that are prepared from scratch that Schmidt is most proud of. All of the restaurant’s burgers are hand-pattied, the ribs are cooked from scratch and the barbecue pork is a homemade product as well. Backyard also is now cooking their own french fries.

“(You can) feel best about it because it’s not someone else’s. It’s not a pre-done product,” he said.
